Is Jargon a Major Issue in the Field of Construction Technology?

It is important for those who work within the field of construction technology to have a shorthand they can speak. As experts in that particular field, why explain something with a paragraph when a sentence will clearly do? However, what happens when that jargon trickles down to show up on reports for disbursement companies and other non-tech entities?

Use Language the Reader Will Understand

It is really very simple: if you want the reader to understand what you are saying, then you should use words they will understand. For example, at Fund Control, we work with private equity firms that are ready to get their hands dirty and invest in real estate, but they might not know all the lingo. Why would we use this is in our software if they would not understand?

As another example: people working in the field think of things like hours and crew days – not “allocated labor resources.” There is nothing wrong with using simple language to explain simple concepts.

Put Yourself in the Shoes of Your Reader

If you are involved in construction tech, then you are in the business of communicating. In order to do so as effectively as possible, you will need to put yourself in the shoes of the reader. Construction professionals are generally very busy, no-nonsense people that just want the facts and the data. They just want the information – not the jargon that comes along with it.

Communicate What You Can Actually Do

Many construction tech companies have spent big money working on a one- or two-sentence explanation of what their product can do. This makes sense when you are working on an ad campaign, but it does not make sense when you are getting face time with a construction manager.

At that point, you want to start with their needs. Do not tell them that a piece of technology can offer “value-added risk mitigation.” Ask them how many injuries their crew has experienced. Ask them how many of them could have been prevented if your product had been implemented. Then show them how the product actually works. Bring them from what they do to what you do – not the other way around.
